Common questions and tips from our work with Ellicott City customers.
- Why won't my lawnmower start after winter?
- Fuel left in the tank over the winter breaks down and leaves a varnish that clogs the small jets in the carburetor. The engine may crank but never catch, or start and then die. A fouled spark plug or a dirty air filter can make it worse. Cleaning the carburetor and replacing the old fuel, the plug and the filter usually brings it back.
- Why does my mower die when I hit thick grass?
- Stalling under load usually means the engine is starved for fuel or air. A partly clogged carburetor, a dirty air filter or a weak spark can let a mower idle fine and then quit when the blade bogs down. A dull or bent blade also adds load. Tell us when it stalls and how it sounds, and we can start narrowing it down.
- Is my old mower worth repairing?
- It depends on the engine's condition and the cost of parts. A carburetor clogged by stale fuel or a worn spark plug is usually worth fixing. A cracked deck, a thrown rod or heavy smoke from worn internals can tip the balance toward replacing it. The owner looks it over and gives you an honest recommendation before any work starts.
Tip
Store your mower so it starts in spring
At the end of the season, either run the tank dry or fill it with fresh fuel treated with a stabilizer. Scrape grass off the underside of the deck, check the oil, and store the mower somewhere dry. These steps keep varnish out of the carburetor and rust off the deck, the two problems that most often stop a mower in the first warm weeks.
